Facebook Analytics: A Useful Digital Marketing Aid for Small Businesses

A digital marketing campaign using social media platforms can only be counted useful, if its success can be accurately measured. The number of contacts, followers and fans you have mean nothing on their own. The amount of business these numbers bring in is what really matters.

In late November, 2010, Facebook released a new insight for owners of small companies that have a Facebook business page. These owners or their hired digital marketing firms will now be able to view data about 'per-post impressions' and 'feedback' for every message posted after June 25, 2010. Previously, only businesses that had Facebook pages with more than 10,000 'Likes' were permitted to view such data.

This new upgrade allows digital marketing specialists to learn about the number of times a fan views a post in their news feeds. This is accomplished through the 'Impressions' feature that is served for every post on a page. The percentage displayed here, stands for the number of times users have liked or commented on a post. This insight also tells you about monthly active users (MAU). Also, all unique users that view a message will be counted as a monthly active user.

Owners of small businesses and digital marketing professionals are delighted with this new Facebook feature. Here are some of their reactions:

Jenny Cheifetz, the owner of 'The Sugar Mommy', a New Hamphire based local confectionary brand said, "Whatever feedback we can get is great". Around 280 users have liked the Facebook business page of this confectionary. The owner has also stated that if she can view the type of posts that are generating the most interest, she will keep posting similar sort of digital marketing messages.

Joe Sorge, owner of AJ Bombers, a fast food restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has echoed Cheifetz's response. He said that the ability to check the effectiveness of Facebook page posts could be of great digital marketing value. Sorge uses social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, as well as burger blog for digital marketing purposes. His Facebook business page has around 2,200 'Likes', and is used to urge people to try out the various burgers available at his restaurant.

Sorge made it clear that he was always interested in engagement analytics. He said, "Seeing how many impressions the posts get will be helpful". Sorge was especially interested in the performance of pictures and videos in winning over Facebook users.

Facebook has mentioned on their website that only 'page administrators, application owners, and domain administrators' can view insights data for the business pages owned or administered by them. As digital marketing professionals dig deeper into their page statistics, they will be able to understand more about what makes customers 'click'.
