Top Digital Marketing Highlights Of 2010 - Social Media

The year 2010 was a great year for social media. Here is a review of the leading social media highlights of the year, which affected the digital marketing strategies of various brands:

1. Facebook becomes number one: In July 2010, Facebook overtook internet giant Google as the largest website, in terms of market share. Later in the year, Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, was named Time's 'Man Of The Year'. Regardless of this, Facebook is still considered to be the 'bad boy' of social media, because of its perceived lack of concern for user privacy.

2. Deepwater Horizon oil spill: The delayed reaction of BP, the London based oil and natural gas company that was named responsible for the spill, together with an insensitive CEO, damaged the firm's brand and reputation. Even with an expensive digital marketing campaign, the company was unable to stop the viral nature of comments on social media sites, which led to a huge public relations disaster.

3. Old Spice's digital marketing ad campaign: Old Spice changed the way adverting campaigns were being conducted on social networking channels, with its two day, 186 video campaign in real-time, across platforms. According to various digital marketing statistics, the viral video campaign of Old Spice generated about 69 million views. This digital marketing campaign was conducted to reposition the brand to a younger, more Internet savvy, audience.

4. LeBron James: Basketball player LeBron James created a Twitter account, to announce which team he would be switching to. However, he forgot that the main aim of social media is to keep fans engaged, and listen to their opinions. Even though more than 100,000 users began 'following' him immediately, they soon began posting negative comments, after he announced his switch.

5. Haiti earthquake: When an earthquake occurred in Haiti in early 2010, people began using social media channels to contact their family and friends, as well as to know about the latest news. Also, many charitable organizations began using digital marketing tactics on social media sites, to raise funds. The most prominent of these was the Clinton Bush Haiti fund, which was in the news for raising an astonishing US$ two billion in just six months.

6. Social Media Day: Leading digital marketing news website, Mashable, declared the 30th of June to be Social Media Day. On this day, more than 700 seminars were held across six continents, many of which were streamed live.

7. FIFA World Cup: According to a digital marketing analysis conducted by Twitter, three soccer-related terms: FIFA World Cup, Vuvuzela and Pulpo Paul, were some of the dominant trending topics on the micro-blogging website.

The above list proves that social media matters a lot to people, globally. This includes both companies and fans of their brands, as well as prospective customers, distributors, the press, and other groups.
