Ten Commandments Of Digital Marketing

This New Year, we have come up with some resolutions for digital marketing professionals. We have named our list of resolutions, ‘The Ten Commandments of Marketing’. Here they go:

1. Thou shalt not use unwanted messages to target customers: Modern consumers suffer from an overdose of information, and usually ignore online advertising. According to various digital marketing studies, ad recall and click-through rates are at an all time low.

2. Thou shalt tell the truth: In the digital world, companies can no longer tell half-truths about the benefits of their products and services. It is easy for consumers to find the truth, and when they do, the brand’s reputation will surely suffer.

3. Thou shalt give respect to consumers: Digital marketing professionals need to respect the privacy, intelligence and resourcefulness of customers, and their power over creating and filtering content.

4. Thou shalt make yourself findable: This commandment refers to using good SEO techniques to make it easy for customers to find digital marketing information about your brand, online.

5. Thou shalt be of use: The products or services you are selling must be useful to customers, or sales will stop coming in when spending gets tight. In addition, marketing information should also be useful, like how-to videos or customer chat.

6. Thou shalt make content sharable: One of the most powerful things that influences customer purchases is ‘word of mouth’. Recommendations come from friends, experts or even strangers. Brands can make it easy for people to recommend digital marketing content by adding ‘share this’ links.

7. Thou shalt evaluate and optimise: The availability of marketing automation tools has enabled marketers to work with huge amounts of digital marketing data, which is collected very quickly. This data helps find out what tactics are working or not working, and optimise thus.

8. Thou shalt pay attention to what customers are saying: People usually talk about a product/service only when they love or hate it. Digital marketing professionals should ‘listen’ to these online conversations, especially on social media sites, and modify their marketing material, accordingly.

9. Thou shalt remove organizational barriers to innovation: Ensure better communications between the product development and marketing departments, so that customer’s needs/ideas can be met, speedily.

10. Thou shalt not do over branding: Just like reputation, a brand is something that is earned over a period of time. It is not something that advertisers should have to repeatedly tell consumers through ads.
