Recent Digital Marketing Developments
In the Autumn of 2011, there was a great deal of activity on the social, local and mobile fronts, with various companies coming out with announcements on different digital marketing forums:
Here is a sum-up of the top digital marketing related developments:
• Facebook Deals: After trying its daily deals product in five cities, for four months, Facebook decided to wind down this offering. According to a statement by the social media company, they have learnt a lot from their test and will continue to evaluate how they can best serve local companies.
• Facebook Places: Facebook also announced that they are getting rid of Facebook Places, which they launched only a year ago. This functionality allowed users with smartphones to check-in to various establishments to avail digital marketing discounts. Instead, Facebook will allow users to share their location from its other digital marketing platforms, by enabling location tagging on posts.
• Yelp Deals: Just like Facebook, Yelp also indicated that it will soon be downsizing the sales staff for its daily deals product. This is another sign that the daily deals market is suffering because of the growth of numerous platforms.
• Groupon: This daily deals company announced that they were delaying their initial public offering. According to news from Wall Street, Groupon has cancelled its investor road show, and will be rechecking their IPO because of volatility in the stock markets.
• Google acquires Motorola Mobility: The management of Google has said that the total dedication of Motorola Mobility to Android has created a natural fit for both businesses. According to CEO Larry Page, “Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers”.
• Google acquires Zagat: Another news item widely reported in the digital marketing world was Google’s acquisition of Zagat, the restaurant review website. Marissa Mayer, a Vice President at Google was thrilled at this purchase and wrote that Zagat will be a cornerstone of their local product, offering people an impressive collection of reviews, ratings and insights, to help them find extraordinary (and ordinary) experiences.
• Dreamforce cloud conference: This year’s digital marketing conference will always be remembered for Eric Schmidt’s (Google’s executive chairman) quote that the future is ‘mobile, local and social’. Schmidt said that the next big developments in the digital marketing world would be technologies from the mobile, local or social spheres, providing users with real-time access to local info.
