New Facebook Module To Help Digital Marketing Campaigns
According to an estimate by eMarketer, a leading digital marketing research company, Facebook earned a whopping $1.86 billion from advertising revenue in 2010. Yet, this social networking giant did not choose to bask in its newfound glory and success for long. Instead, Facebook recently added a new feature for its users, which seems to have been created to enrich the geo-targeting possibilities of its digital marketing platform.
Based in Palo Alto in California, Facebook is now displaying a sidebar module on the home page seen by each user when they sign-in. This sidebar module is designed to find out the name of the city where each particular Facebook user resides. On the top of the module is text which says 'Which city do you live in?' Beneath the title text, appears the name of a city and state, such as 'San Francisco, California'. This sidebar module also includes a photograph of a landmark of that city, from the city's Facebook community page.
Under the name of the city is a list of friends of a particular user, who live in that city. If a Facebook user lives in that particular city, they can click the 'I live here' button under the city photo. If they live in another city, they can click the 'Choose another city' link to go to an editor, from where they can select another city. The module vanishes when a user clicks the "x" button. Facebook users that have already entered the name of their city in their public profiles are apparently not being served this geo-targeting sidebar module.
It is being widely reported that this new module has been created to enhance the ability of the digital marketing channel, to display ads that are targeted to a user's location. This news was first reported by InsideFacebook.com, a leading digital marketing website that tracks the Facebook platform for developers and marketers.
Clearly, this module will enable Facebook to learn about the location of a majority of its 550 million users. When details about user location is entered in a user's profile data, digital marketing advertisements pertaining to local restaurants, convenience stores, musical events and daily deal marketers can be easily displayed.
In other news, Goldman Sachs had announced that they will limit the availability of their shares in Facebook to foreign investors. This is being done due to concerns that the deal could run against United States securities regulations. This digital marketing news has come a few weeks after the massive investment firm revealed its $450 million stake in Facebook, the seven-year-old social media and digital marketing giant.
