Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)

Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is an ‘association technique’ used by all the major search engines today: For example the words Paris and Hilton are NOT associated with the French capital and luxury hotels – They are associated with the socialite Paris Hilton.

Google has to index billions of pages. It associates words frequently found together on those pages. So if it has a high percentage of them with Paris and Hilton, it might well accept those keywords are associated. Depending on content it might also accept Paris Hilton is a woman.

How Will LSI Affect You?
Google has masses of collective data which allows them to assess relationships between words. If your website does not account for Latent Semantic Indexing then it will affect ranks: Therefore, to get the best rank for certain keywords it is important to demonstrate your site is relevant to that particular topic.

How Can Get Better Ranks?
There are various ways to use LSI to achieve better ranks:

»  Pages can be created specifically for different keywords. For example, if your target key phrase is     ‘used cars’ pages should be created using keywords associated with this topic – ‘Auto’ for     instance. The more associated keyword pages a site has indexed; the better the rank will be for     keywords relative to that topic.

»  Inbound links from websites associated with the topic are beneficial. If the topic is ‘used cars’    then it is important to get inbound links from website relative to cars – Not designer handbags or    movies for instance.

»  In the same vein, it is important to avoid submitting your website to directory categories that are     not relevant. This can also have a negative affect on ranking.

»  If your site architecture is systematic it will improve rank. Creating sections for content relevant to     your main keywords and topic is important.

»  Research: If competitors’ pages are ranking higher than yours find out why: Examine the inbound     links of those pages. The quality and relevance of inbound links is an important factor

To improve ranks it is important to take Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) into account. This effectively means NOT focusing on one single keyword or phase: But also optimising pages which are associated with those keywords: This is the way to achieve the best ranks, even among the most advanced search engines.
