Hooking The Right Digital Marketing Talent
The advertising industry might be constructed with ideas, but it actually functions on the hours spent implementing those ideas. In some ways, marketing (especially digital marketing) fulfils the ancient proverb, ‘Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime’. However, to teach a man to fish (do digital marketing tasks), the man must first be open towards learning new things.
When we think about what this could mean for talented individuals in the digital marketing field, it is obvious that prior to becoming greater than our parts, it is important to modify the present culture. Today, it is clear that there is a shortage of digital marketing talent, based upon the type of demand created by the marketplace. From the company side, this is further worsened by the lack of financial growth opportunities, which results in digital marketing employees hopping jobs for better salaries elsewhere. This in turn makes companies reluctant to invest in talent.
Career growth in the marketing field comes with a price. Many digital marketing professionals often complain that they do not have the right mentor to guide them with their career. However, the main tragedy here is that most employees (talented people with strong growth potential) lack a good manager, rather than a mentor. Within that lies the real reason for today’s talent crunch – a shortage of qualified people who are competent managers.
In the digital marketing arena; we search and hire suitable talent, develop client relationship skills, formulate and execute online marketing strategies etc. However, we rarely recruit managers who understand how to nurture the talent of those who work under them, and motivate employees to perform even better. Of course, team leaders exist. However, the responsibilities and rewards given to them are rarely connected to developing talent in the organisation to a level where employees can one day be leaders.
In the field of sports, we say that a great coach is most of all a ‘leader of people’. A coach is someone who can unite a team of people with diverse personalities behind a common vision. He should be able to motivate them to do things that they never believed they could possibly do. Is that what managers are doing in the digital marketing environment? Are our managers capable of only executing a media buy or can they do more?
