Digital Marketing through Linkedin

Linkedin has grown considerably over the last 8 years and is now a major social networking platform. Despite this most businesses have yet to incorporate it effectively into their digital marketing strategy. In this article we will provide an overview on how Linkedin works and how to start utilising it as an effective digital marketing tool. In future articles we will then explore specific digital marketing strategies for Linkedin in more depth.

Overview of Linkedin

Linkedin was founded by Reid Hoffman and launched in May 2003. Since its launch it has grown in popularity year on year with it attaining approximately 75 million registered users in August 2010. Although Linkedin was originally founded in the US its popularity in Europe has grown considerably in the last few years with the UK now having over four million registered users.

Linkedin's concept

To understand how Linkedin can be effectively utilised for digital marketing purposes it is first essential to understand its core concept. The purpose of Linkedin is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. The people in the list are called Connections. Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection. Linkedin is set up to predominantly help create professional relationships as opposed to Facebook and other social networking websites which are mainly used for social interactions.

Paid Advertising

Until recently the predominant method of digital marketing on Linkedin was through social networking. However the site has recently added the ability to do paid advertising which has created a whole new dimension to how it can be utilised for digital marketing purposes. We will in the near future dedicate a whole article to discussing how Linkedin's paid advertising platform can be potentially utilised for effective digital marketing.
