Digital Marketing - Location-Based Utility Apps

The growth of location-based services (LBS) is expected to continue, with the development of new applications and digital marketing technologies for enhancing user experience. Internet users are expected to start extending recommendations to locations in other areas, from where they are currently located. This means that digital marketing innovators like Google and Facebook, will have to make robust updates to their suite of location apps, to make them more appealing to Internet users.

In fact, Google has already introduced some new digital marketing updates for their Latitude and Places products. One such update is the 'HotPot' on Google Places, a location-based tool for rating and reviewing places, which works on a social recommendation system. Leading review-based website Yelp has also begun using Facebook's Open Graph API, to collect social recommendations based on reviews posted by a particular user's Facebook friends.

Location Based Specialty Services

Digital marketing research agencies also predict the growth and evolution of LBS applications that focus on providing utility services, which are based on the location of the user. Some digital marketing developments in this direction are:

. Droplat: This app is a location-based file storage system, which allows users to have a virtual drive of 250 MB, which follows them across various locations. Each location they visit also has its own drive, which contains files left behind by other users. All files on the Droplat servers are public. This service may be limited, but it displays how a person's location can add a new digital marketing dimension to a simple file sharing utility.

. Tasker: This location-based Android app, can change the date, time and other preferences of a phone, depending on the location of the user. Some things that can be automatically done through this digital marketing app are switching the phone to silent while entering the office, turning up the phone volume in a crowded marketplace, and changing the wallpaper according to location.

. Broadcastr: This app allows people to record, organise and listen to audio content, depending on where they are located. Some things which people like to hear while visiting a new place are restaurant reviews, local lore, citizen journalism, travel anecdotes and so on. For example, Broadcastr has audio stories on the World Trade Towers, which people standing near Ground Zero can access and hear.
