Digital Marketing - Getting Customers To Write Reviews

According to a recent digital marketing study, more than 59 percent of consumers think that ratings and reviews are a vital factor for choosing a company with which to do business. However, only 27 percent of customers actually check ratings and reviews while making a purchase decision. On checking further, it was learnt that the main reason for this discrepancy was the non-availability of good rating and review content, for many types of products/services.

Another number unearthed by this digital marketing study was that about 23 percent of consumers submit a rating or review, on websites like Yelp. This means that if prospective customers place so much importance on ratings and reviews, then companies with more content on review sites are more likely to be considered by customers, and later selected. Hence, companies should make an attempt to collect reviews and ratings from their customers.

One of the main digital marketing methods of getting good reviews and ratings is to ask existing customers to visit review sites, and post their ratings. Some rating and review websites, like Yelp, discourage this practice on the grounds that it influences the ‘authenticity’ of ratings. This is not true. In fact, asking one’s loyal customers to write a review is just like asking a customer to refer your company to others. It is also the first thing you can do to get review-related digital marketing content on the Internet.

An easy way to get this done is to post a sign at your business premises asking customers to review your company on leading review-based digital marketing platforms, such as Yelp, Google and Facebook. Some of the other digital marketing techniques used by companies to ask customers to post reviews/ratings are:

• Passing out small note cards to customers with details about where to write reviews, when they are presented with a bill or are standing at the cash register.

• Asking a staff member to verbally remind customers while they are making a purchase.

• Sending customers thank you letters or emails, which also ask them to post feedback on specified review/ rating websites.

When requesting people to review your company, you should avoid the practice of paying for reviews, or even offering a discount. In addition, you should avoid asking your friends or family to write digital marketing reviews, as they often sound too promotional.
