Digital Marketing - Facebook Places vs Google Places

Facebook Places is a check-in application, which works in a similar fashion to location-based social networking website, Foursquare. The only main difference between the two digital marketing platforms is that Facebook Places does not presently contain a game component. However, with the growing popularity of game apps, like CityVille, among Facebook users, it is expected that the social networking website will soon include a new gaming factor for their Places digital marketing product.

Getting Facebook Places To Work

. Go to 'Places' using your Facebook application, and tap the 'Check In' button. You will be shown a list of places around you, using data from Localeze. If the place you are currently at is not displayed on the list, you can either run a search for it by typing its name, or add it yourself.

. Choose your place and tap 'Check In'. Automatically, a message will be displayed in your friend's news feeds that you have 'checked in' to that particular location.

. After checking-in, Facebook users also have the option of tagging friends who are currently with them or posting an update, to give their friends more information about what they are currently doing.

In addition to Facebook going local, Google has also renamed their Local Business Center 'Google Places'. Both Facebook and Google are trying to get small and medium sized local businesses to create their digital marketing Places pages, to attract more local customers and enhance revenues. While the biggest need not always be the best, in this case it is true. Both Google and Facebook have a massive audience, which gives them a huge digital marketing advantage over other location-based services.

. According to various digital marketing statistics, more than 100 million people use Google Maps every month from their smartphones, to find directions and get contact information.

. Conversely, Facebook has a personal digital marketing advantage. With its 500 million users who are connected to real friends, opinions on Facebook really seem to mean something.

While Google allows prospective customers to find the place they are looking for, Facebook enables them to share their experience with their friends. Hence, it is important for small businesses to enhance their digital marketing strategy, by creating both a Google Places page, as well as listing themselves on Facebook.
