Digital Marketing Clash between Google and Facebook

Almost all digital marketing professionals are awaiting the exciting face-off between the two titans of the digital marketing sphere. On one side we have Google, the king of search, and on the other side we have Facebook, the king of social networking. The main reason these two behemoths find themselves in a clash, is the impending launch of Google Plus.

Over the last couple of years, Google has tried almost everything to gain a foothold in the social space. Similarly, with the addition of every new user to Facebook, the Facebook advertising network has widened its reach. With the proposed introduction of features like +Circles and Hangouts to Google Plus, Google seems to have unearthed something of value. Digital marketing insiders are intrigued by these new features, while Facebook is also working to respond to the challenge.

In fact, in July 2011, Facebook announced its solution to Hangouts (the video chat app of Google+), with a partnership with Skype. This online phoning service is one of the latest acquisitions of Microsoft, one of Google's leading foes and one-time Internet king. However, this is expected to do little to stop someone who wishes to switch over to Google+ from Facebook, if they are really interested in joining the new social networking platform. Facebook will have to develop new apps and digital marketing features, if they want to make their users stay.

When we look at the digital marketing turf on which this battle is being fought, it is obvious that Google has clearly invaded some of Facebook's area. However, since it has been trying to do this for a long time with products like Google Wave and Orkut, it is not that much of a surprise. On the other hand, if Facebook suddenly announced that they were launching a new search engine, a considerable amount of interest would be generated among digital marketing experts.

According to digital marketing research from various sources, it has been discovered that most users usually travel in circles between Google and Facebook. Most start with running a search on Google, before visiting a Facebook profile from the search results page, and later return to Google to conduct more searches. Google +1, a product launched a few months back, was Google's way of connecting social media with search, and competing with Microsoft's growing closeness with Facebook.
