Google Buzz

Like Face book and Twitter, Google has its own social network called Google Buzz. We have seen how Facebook has been ideal for digital marketing over the period of time. What any company wants to know is, does Google Buzz offer them opportunities for digital marketing like Facebook or not.

There are many views as to whether Google Buzz does in fact offer digital marketing or not. Some argue that it does not, while some agree that Google Buzz offers great opportunities for digital marketing. Betsy Miller Director of marketing, Blueport Commerce, with eight years of marketing experience is of the view that Google Buzz offers many marketers an opportunity for digital marketing. She believes that if Google Buzz is able to make a comeback from the negative publicity it has received over the period of time, people and many marketers will see that it provides some fantastic tools for digital marketing. Betsy Miller herself finds the 'decision tree' function quite prominent.

Google Buzz is different from the regular social networks like Facebook and Twitter in the sense that it encourages co-operation with each other, while sharing ideas and views, through conversation threads and sharing of pictures and videos. It is not meant to give social updates on what people in your friend list are doing or tell marketers what people are buying.

Google Buzz can help a company in their decision making, as they person to person interaction is very common here. Marketers will benefit if they design such a product, which is capable enough to start a conversation on buzz, and encourage people to make purchases as peer to peer conversation is the most powerful marketing tool there is!

Rob Lawson the CMO and cofounder, Brightkite.com with more that fifteen years of marketing experience thinks that Google Buzz does not provide good opportunities for digital marketing. He believes that marketers should take note that local advertising is still a step behind and takes place in yellow pages and newspapers. He questions whether local advertising through digital marketing will really help.

Another issue with this kind of digital marketing is privacy. Rob Lawson feels that it will be great for consumers and marketers, but only if Google executes it correctly. He feels that privacy has not been worked on and this may be a negative aspect of Google Buzz and will only work for marketers if consumers are assured about privacy.
